Chapter 20

Kim tried to appear nonchalant when Isaac came into work the next morning. Yesterday had been so busy they hadn’t had time to get caught up in the what-do-we-do-next hoopla from having sex. Today’s schedule was relatively slow. On slow days Isaac typically spent the day playing catch up in his office. She’d did the same and checked in on him every so often before leaving the floor to handle other work. Which meant a long day of just the two of them in the office while she tried to figure out how to ask him to dinner at her house without making dinner with her family sound like something monumental.

He entered scrolling through his phone as usual. A serious expression on his face. His gray suit fit him perfectly. Kim remembered just how perfect his body was beneath the clothes and shifted in her seat.

He stopped at her desk. “Everything okay?”

She tried to smile. She’d treat dinner like a bandage. Rip the damn thing off quickly. “Everything is good. Ma just has a lot of...concerns.”

He stopped scrolling through his phone and slipped it into his pocket. “Concerns?”

“About us. My grandmother figured out that you weren’t in the bathroom the other day.”

“That wasn’t hard to figure out,” he said with a half-smile. “Why is she concerned?”

“Here’s the thing, I’ve spent two years insisting I wouldn’t hook up with you. Now I am. It’s kind of spontaneous to her.”

His look said he understood the dilemma. “Couldn’t you just tell her things naturally progressed?”

“That’s not the only reason she’s worried.” Like a bandage. “I need to ask for an advance on my salary, and she’s worried I’m sleeping with you to get you to say yes.”

After arguing with Nakita for more than an hour about all the reasons not to work for Rebecca, then her grandmother coming home with a pocket full of money from BINGO and suggesting she could double her winnings at one of the new gaming houses, Kim decided asking Isaac for the advance was the path of least detrimental consequences.

Isaac did one slow blink. “Come again?”

Embarrassment heated her face. “She’s worried that I’m—”

“I heard what you said. Why would she think you’d do that?”

Saying history repeating itself wasn’t the right answer. “She’s naturally pessimistic.”

“Why do you need the advance?”

Kim relaxed a little. She could give him some of the truth. “The man who owns our house is selling it. My grandmother wants to buy it, but she doesn’t have enough for a down payment. I’m helping her get the rest of the money.”

“How much?”

“Five thousand.”

“I can’t give you the advance, but I’ll give you the money.”

It was Kim’s turn to give a slow blink. “What?”

“I can’t give you the advance. Not while I’m trying to win over board members. If they look into the company finances, doing you financial favors won't look good.”

“Then how will you give me the money?”

“Out of my personal account,” he said simply.

She shook her head and stood. “No. You can’t do that.”

“Why not? I told you I’d take care of you.
